And probably with good reason but it can\u2019t be done with a blink of an eye, there has to be a sound analysis done before mobilizing<strong>\u00a0Business<\/strong> <strong>Intelligence<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Challenges of\u00a0Business Intelligence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><!--more-->First, let\u2019s <strong><em>define<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>objectives<\/em><\/strong>, which is not always evident considering that although <strong>Business<\/strong> <strong>Intelligence<\/strong> may be used by many business units it could also be useful while not critical to these same business units operations; in short, define clear objectives if you want to be able to measure the impact and eventually, the ROI.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Enhancing Mobile Workforce productivity<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Probably the most evident objective but even then\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pushing sales representatives out of the office and increasing the number of clients\u2019 meetings<\/li>\n<li>Enhancing the decision-making process of sales representatives in terms of business offering at Point of Contact<\/li>\n<li>Better servicing Clients by providing the right information, anytime, anywhere<\/li>\n<li>Saving time by eliminating trips looking for information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Creating a differentiating \/ competitive advantage<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Will strategic information at the Point of Contact with Clients give you a competitive advantage enabling you to better service your Clients than competitors?<\/li>\n<li>Will strategic information at the Point of Contact with Clients generate a higher closing rate than competitors?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0major challenge consists in <strong><em>selecting the critical information <\/em><\/strong>to mobilize, considering the business units it\u2019ll be used by?\u00a0 Generally speaking; the information presented to either the representative or the client should help\/enhance the decision-making process.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the business development (ex: availability or not of a product; ex: rates\/fees chart for a\u00a0 specific class of clients)<\/li>\n<li>For Clientele Satisfaction (<em>ex\u00a0: recent notes taken from the client relationship<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>For Productivity (<em>ex\u00a0: clients\u2019 activities \/ sales ratio, sales volume, etc<\/em>.)<\/li>\n<li>Competitive advantages? (<em>ex\u00a0: added-value products or services outplaying competitors<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A 3<sup>rd<\/sup> major challenge consists in\u00a0<strong><em>ensuring security of the mobilized information<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The challenge consists in enabling access to critical data from outside the office but without using a VPN link and without compromising data and systems security.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of a financial institution, for example, the cost for this functionality is certainly non-negligible. \u00a0At the opposite, if the information mobilized concerns mainly a standard consumer product inventory, efforts to secure data shall be minimal.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the decision-maker shall keep in mind that for most of IT environments, security was implemented as far as the walls of the premises; making a whole in the walls of any enterprise could make for more than a challenge for most IT departments.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Parameters<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We shall just oversee the most evident variables you should take into account in the development of your <strong>Business<\/strong> <strong>Intelligence<\/strong> application (mobile \/ web mobile).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The nature of information \/ data manipulated<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Enterprise data (<em>ex.: real-time inventory, clients\u2019 strategic data (notes, YTD Sales, Capex, % repeat business, etc<\/em>.)<\/li>\n<li>Non-structured data (<em>ex.: any information being part of the business management communication flux not identified in a specific way in a specific application such as emails, telephone conversations, etc.<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Multimedia content (<em>ex.: any audio, video or infographic content such as a critical software training video, Evernote notes, etc<\/em>.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>The vector or final destination<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Impact and restrictions of IT technology environment (<em>back office<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Smartphones (Mobile Web mode or native)<\/li>\n<li>Tablets (Mobile Web mode or native)<\/li>\n<li>BYOD (Bring your Own Device)<\/li>\n<li>Cloud<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Mobile Communication method<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Data transfer \/ bandwidth capacity (what are your real needs?, how many heavy users and occasional users?)<\/li>\n<li>Will your Mobile Workforce work in an area or environment where the internet\/mobile connections get frequently cut?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Security\u2026 again and again!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Data Reading Authorization only<\/li>\n<li>Data Reading &amp; Writing in systems Authorization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Much ado about\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>What\u2019s surprising with the <em>wave of the day<\/em> in technology is that it\u2019s such a buzz that although everybody agrees on the advantages of the concept or technology; we very often forget the original benefit praised, likewise with <strong>Business Intelligence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from meeting your objectives and profit from it, have you implemented metrics to really \u00ab\u00a0measure\u00a0\u00bb the impact of the mobilized <strong>Business Intelligence<\/strong>; in short, what\u2019s the true ROI of your investment in mobilizing <strong>Business Intelligence<\/strong> for your enterprise?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a few metrics to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which data are really useful; the most read, the most profitable?<\/li>\n<li>What are the real benefits, the real impact?\n<ul>\n<li><em>More Sales<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Shorter Sales Cycle<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>More Marketing Activities<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>More Client Activities<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Less Contract errors<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Overall enhanced Clientele Satisfaction<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In short, in technology more than anywhere else, it\u2019s important to measure the impact of your investments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Safe journey,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><a href=\"mailto:denispaulvc@dvcom.ca\"><strong>Denis Paul<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0&amp;\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:mmartel@analystik.ca\"><strong>Michel<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everybody talks about BI\u00a0(Business Intelligence) and its virtues since a few years; everybody wants BI seeing in it a miracle remedy to its enterprise or Sales Force performance or thinking it could be the new growth vector they\u2019re looking for.
